Backpack Tutorial

I have combined a backpack idea with a concertina box......

....I'm sure there may be an easier way to do this -

but this is the way I put mine together!

Please feel free to C.A.S.E., but if you decide to

post pictures or use in a class, please be respectful and link back to me/here.

Many Thanks!

Enjoy!

What you need

Card Stock:

2  of 51/2" x 8" (Front & Back)

2 of 5"x 71/2" (Sides) Score along 5" side every 1/2"

41/2"x 51/2" (Base) Score along 41/2" side at 1" & 31/2"

61/2"x 51/2" (Top) Score along 61/2" side at 11/2" & 21/2"

3" x 81/2" (Pocket) Score along long side at 21/2", 3" 6" & 61/2"

2 of 21/2"x 11/2" (Pocket Sides) Score along 21/2" side at 1/2" and 1"

Ribbon:

Total: 56"

4" + 4" (To secure sides)

28" (For tying top closed)

10"+10" (For back straps)

Other:

Crop-a-dile or hole punch

Brads, Buttons or Large Eyelets

Designer Paper or other Embellishments

Tag punch

Paper plate

Pencil

Scoring tool

Red Sticky Strip

Magnet Closures if desired.

Snail Adhesive

Instructions

1.  Cut and score to prep all your card stock.

backpack1

2. Fold the sides of your box where you have scored at every 1/2".

The punch a hole with the crop-a dile, I set mine at 1/2".

Do this on both ends of both sides.

backpack2

Should look like this.

backpack3

3.  Thread your ribbon through one end of each side - like this.

backpack4

4. Put a piece of red sticky strip at the edge of the side, beside the hole

you punched, and stick the end of the ribbon down.

backpack5

5. Adjust the folds so that your edge is 2 1/2" wide from

the first scored fold to the last, like this.

Stick the other end of your ribbon down and trim the excess off.

backpack6

6. Put red sticky strip on the edge of the base.

You need to put it as close to the edge as you can.

backpack7

7. Put snail adhesive dotted along the score line.

backpack8

8. Adhere the Front and Back to the base.

Put the scored edges of the base on the OUTSIDE

of the front and back.

backpack9

9. Put red sticky strip down each side of the side pieces.

backpack10

10. Adhere the side to the front, by placing the first scored fold to the edge of the front

- take care to make sure the

end with the ribbon is AT THE BOTTOM

backpack11

11. Do the same with the other side, again making sure

that the ribbon end is at the bottom.

backpack12

12. Adhere the other sides to the front and back.

backpack13

13. You need to punch a hole through the TOP for your ribbon.

You can use the hole you have punched in the side panels as a guide.

backpack14

Do this on all four sides.

backpack15

14.  I like the front pocket and flap to be curved - so I use a paper

plate to draw a curve and then trim by hand.

backppack16

So, the top will look like this.

backpack17

15. Thread your ribbon through all the holes -

start at the front, thread through to the back,

across the back and through to the front again.

backpack18

backpack19

16. Match up the first score line on the top

flap with the top back of the main piece, and stick down.

This will cover your ribbon that goes across the back -

but also means you will not be able to move the ribbon once you

have stuck it down - so make sure you have pulled all your ribbon evenly through.

backpack20

17. Your bag will look like this...

(I cut off the curved top in my photo - so it won't look quite like this LOL! Sorry!

Go to the next pic to see what it WILL look like!!)

This makes a cute gift bag as it is......

backpack21

backpack22

18.  Now punch a hole in the front, and attach

whatever you want to decorate with - button , brad or eyelet.

backpack23

19.  Now for the little pocket.

Put red sticky strip down the sides of each of the pockets sides,

put it as close to the score lines as possible.

backpack26

20. Attach the sides to the main pocket.

Put the fold as close to the edge as you can.

backpack27

21. Do the same on the other side and then punch a

hole and finish as you did with the front flap of the main pack.

On mine I added a piece of Designer Series Paper, and also a magnet,

so that the little flap stays closed.  I also did this on the main flap of the bag.

You can use velcro or other fastener you prefer.

Stick the little pocket to the backpack with sticky strip.

backpack28

22.  Now to make the straps.

Take these pieces, adhere the ribbon to 2 of the tag punched shapes.

backpack29

backpack30

23.  Attach both of the opposite ends of the ribbons on to the 3rd tag.

Take care to lay out your ribbon flat so that you don't stick them down twisted.

backpack31

24.  Attach those to the main bag - like this.

backpack32

And you are finished!

Just embellish it as you wish!
